A brief about Gemological Testing:

Gemological Testing is a non-destructive scientific method of identifying the gems in which several tests are performed on a gemstone to diagnose the mineral group or type of the gem.

During testing several optical, physical, and chemical properties of the gemstone are determined to diagnose its group or species by using standard gemological instruments. The diagnostic properties are Refractive Index, Optic Character, Specific Gravity, Pleochroism, Light Absorption, Fluorescence, Hardness, etc. The microscopic techniques are applied to identify the inclusions in gemstones.

Inclusions are characteristic features and diagnostic signatures in gemstones that are developed and preserved during growth of gem minerals. Both, natural and man-made (synthetic) gemstones possess inclusions of varying nature and shape that are characteristics of their origin. Proper identification and careful observation of these inclusions tell a gemologist about natural or synthetic nature of gems. Also an experienced gemologist can tell about the origin and geological occurrence of the gemstones by identifying the inclusions under the microscope.

Many natural gemstones are commonly subjected to number of treatments/enhancements before they come into the market. These treatments/enhancements include heat treatment, lead-glass filling, diffusion, irradiation, color dyeing, oiling, fracture filling, laser drilling etc. to improve the color and/or clarity of the gemstones. These treatments directly influence the price and demand of gemstones. Generally, the treated gemstones fetch low or very low price in comparison to their natural untreated counterparts. Such treatments in gemstones are also identified with the help of microscopic inclusions.
